The arrest of iBomma Immadhi Ravi has been seen as a huge development by the Telugu film industry, whose profits have seen go down because of piracy. However, CV Anand, the former Hyderabad Police Commissioner, has tried to temper expectations.
In a social media post today, he wrote that hackers and hacking will continue to exist. "One goes, another will come, and they will be more sophisticated. It’s utopian to think that piracy or cybercrimes will end with these arrests. Have thefts, burglaries, robberies, and cheating ended with the arrests of big, sophisticated gangs? As long as humans exist, crime will exist in its various forms," he wrote.
Film piracy can be curbed only through prevention. "One should reduce the greed to make quick money, which is the basic reason for the growth of cybercrime. We must take steps to protect our cyberspace and accounts and realize the danger quickly. In life, nothing comes free, as Rajamouli garu said, and that’s the absolute truth of life," he concluded.
CV Anand's note of caution might dampen the optimism in some quarters. A top cop with hands-on experience saying openly that cybercrimes are inevitable is serious. In the age of AI, even advanced economies in the West are unable to eliminate piracy.
