What explains Kuberaa's disaster status in Tamil?

Before the release of Kuberaa, many predicted that it would do better business in Tamil than in Telugu. Even Sekhar Kammula, in a post-release interview, stated that Kuberaa's sensibilities are closer to the tastes of the Tamil audience.

In reality, Kuberaa is headed for a disaster status in Tamil. As per a trade report, it grossed just Rs 20 Cr in its first week. For perspective, the Telugu version contributed four times more. The other day, Kuberaa entered the Rs 100 Cr club.

Kuberaa's fate in Tamil is nothing less than a shocker, especially because Dhanush's form has been strong in the post-pandemic era. Content-wise, the film should have been acceptable to the Tamil audience, who have a history of embracing human dramas.

There are unfounded theories that an online campaign was waged against Kuberaa by the publicist team of a Tamil star. It's also believed that some recent controversies involving Dhanush may have damaged his goodwill among the Tamil audience. They cite Nayanthara's unsparing criticism of Dhanush after he sued her for Rs 10 Cr after the release of her Netflix documentary. These seem to be the time pass theories of gossip-mongers, though.

The shocking failure of Kuberaa in Tamil is truly confounding.
