Bollywood director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's ambitious epic, Karna, is actively seeking a new studio home after Excel Entertainment's departure. The same has been reported by Peeping Moon.
While Tamil actor Suriya remains "attached to the titular role", this casting choice is proving a "significant hurdle in securing new investors". Potential backers are reportedly hesitant, expressing a strong preference for a prominent Bollywood actor to headline the mythological drama.
Karna would have acquired a life of its own had Kanguva become a hit last year. With the film tanking in Hindi and Telugu, Karna's multi-lingual, multi-billion dreams have fallen apart. Even the recent Retro underperformed in Telugu and went unnoticed in Hindi.
Rakyesh Mehra, who has previously directed films like Rang De Basanti, will have to bide his time now. If financiers insist that they can't invest in Suriya, the project will be in a state of limbo.
Suriya will soon start shooting for his 46th movie, directed by Venky Atluri.
