It's known that Rajinikanth's 173rd movie is being produced by Kamal Haasan. This is tentatively referred to as Thalaivar 173. Sundar C was supposed to direct the project, but he opted out of it due to creative differences last year.
In the new year, the Rajini-Kamal duo has found a replacement. Cibi Chakravarthi, a less-known Kollywood filmmaker, will be wielding the megaphone for the prestigious venture, set for a Sankranthi 2027 release. “Every HERO has a FAMILY," the makers wrote, announcing Cibi's onboarding.
Cibi is elated. He shared how a small-town boy’s passion for cinema was ignited by a simple dream to meet his idol, which eventually evolved into the monumental opportunity to direct him. The director of Sivakarthikeyan's Don fame noted that while he had previously come close and missed out, his self-belief led him to Thalaivar 173. Last year, Cibi was rumoured to be in advanced talks with Natural Star Nani for a movie.
Rajinikanth's sole release this year will be Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dhilipkumar. Since this is most likely going to be a June 2026 release, the legendary actor will be seen in a second movie (Thalaivar 173) within six months (Pongal 2027).
