Yashoda International Cancer Conference (YICC) begins today at HICC

Actor Kamal Haasan inaugurated the two day conference

Hyderabad, Jan 24, 2015: Yashoda International Cancer Conference, YICC - 2015, being conducted under the aegis of Yashoda Group of Hospitals, Hyderabad has kick started at HICC (Hyderabad International Convention Centre) today. The two day conference, first of its kind in the city, was attended by more than 1000 delegates from various parts of the country and abroad. The theme of the conference is Oncology: Recent Advances and Newer Horizons.

Actor and director Dr. Kamal Haasan, eminent Oncologist Dr. Mammen Chandy, Honorable Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana Dr. K. Rajaiah garu and Honorable Minister for IT 6t Panchayat Raj of Telangana, Shri K.T.Rama Rao garu, actress and television host Smt. Gowthami graced the inaugural ceremony of conference.
Dr. Mammen Chandy, who is considered the ‘Father of Bone Marrow Tranplant” in India, has launched the Bone Marrow fit Stem Cell Transplantation Center, set up at Yashoda Cancer Institute in Somajiguda. While the chief guest and versatile film actor Dr. Kamal Haasan formally launched the two day conference.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Chandy said cancer is the second most common disease in India responsible for maximum mortality. This is owing to the poor availability of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Reeling out statistics on the incidence of deadly disease in our country, Dr. Chandy said the rate of mortality due to cancer in India was high and alarming. An estimated 7 to 8 lakh death were caused by this disease every year. More than 1 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in a population of 1*2 billion.
‘Although the incidence of cancer is low in India compared with high-income countries, mortality is high, and incidence is projected to rise to 1.7 million individuals in 2035. Hence this is a serious health issue which cannot be ignored' Dr. Chandy averred.

Dr. Kamal Haasan lauded the efforts of the management of Yashoda Group of Hospitals for turning their focus on advancements in cancer treatment. 'Holding an international conference on cancer by bringing together renowned oncologists across the world would go a long way in evolving new therapies, methods and strategies to keep in check the incidence of disease’ he said.

Actress Gowthami, sharing her views, said cancer is no longer a dreaded disease. Unlike in the past, it is a now completely curable and people with the ailment can overcome the trauma with the help of advanced treatment methods and also with a strong mental resolve.

Managing director of Yashoda Group of Hospitals, Hyderabad Dr. G.S Rao, in his welcome address said this is an initiative of Yashoda Cancer Institute, one of the leaders in cancer care, designed to ignite and inspire not only just oncologists but all medical specialists. Yashoda Cancer Institute has been transforming cancer treatment by focusing on the ways to provide quality care and improvement in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The conference will debate and discuss threadbare, in putting to use the recent advancements in medical technologies and procedures, in combating the disease’ he said.

On this occasion Yashoda Group of Hospitals felicitated and presented the Life Time Achievement Award to renowned oncologist Dr. Mammen Chandy for his pioneering contributions to the field of Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation. Eminent International oncologists Dr. Thomas Ind - UK, Dr.Takeshi Sano - Japan, Prof.H.K Tan Singapore, Dr.Safwat - Egypt were also present at the event.
