Dr. Ram Prasad Memorial Soft Skills Workshop for Doctors

A free Soft skill and Practice Refinement Workshop for Medical doctors to be held in city on Sunday

The workshop promises to bring back soft skills into medical practice

How many doctors know that a FIR cannot be filed against them if the medical advice goes wrong? How many know the nitty-gritties in treating a foreign patient? Some of the doctors are not aware that their practice can be insured with a "Professional Indemnity Insurance" ! How many follow the MCI guidelines on Prescription writing and prescribe mostly generic drugs, and write the prescription in capitals ? The Workshop will address these many more interesting issues

Hyderabad, February 10, 2017....You all go to doctors for their technical skills. But, more patients go to doctors for their soft skills. The way they talk, and put patients at ease, the way they explain their medical condition, and the way they give hope, all make them the friendly doctor, whom patients always like to go to. Where are these soft skills in the doctor community today?. While many are good at these, an equal number, especially from the present generation of doctors, lack them.

A free soft skill and practice refinement full day workshop for medical doctors — "Dr. Ram Prasad Memorial Workshop" will be conducted in the city on Sunday, 12th February from 9am to 5pm, at The Katriya Hotel and Towers, Somajiguda , Hyderabad. Nearly 200 doctors from most of the corporate hospitals, Nursing homes, Govt Hospitals, and private practitioners have already registered for the workshop.

The objective of this first of its kind workshop in Hyderabad, promises to bring back soft skills into medical practice. This workshop is the need of the hour. Doctors are not supposed to market their practice as it is considered unethical. Therefore, their soft skills will be their marketing tools. Teaching of soft skills is lacking in the medical curriculum. There are no gurus in medical colleges like in our olden days. There is no guru-sishya- bandham. A Doctor with an MBBS degree and no other formal training is a lost soul in the concrete jungle today.

The workshop is the brain child of Dr. Ravi Kumar, a Consultant Oncologist with Global Hospital and Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital, organised in the loving memory of his father Dr. Ram Prasad, who was well known for his soft skills and clinical diagnosis acumen, and is being arranged on the occasion of the first death anniversary of Dr. Ram Prasad. Dr Ram Prasad is the recipient of The Lifetime Achievement Award from Giani Zail Singh, the then President of India.

In the past, success was attributed to the possession of domain knowledge alone. But things have changed. Nowadays, the combination of both technical and soft skills are very much required. And doctors are no exception. There is a strong need for medical professionals to get sensitized with simple elements in their profession. Doctors should know how to handle patients with better listening skills, interpersonal skills, and communication skills added Dr. Ravi Kumar.

This workshop is a small step. It is a workshop to "Empower the Doctor and Patient Relationship". It is also empowering medical practice, says Dr. Ravi Kumar.

While medical skills are important, a good part of what makes doctors well-regarded by others is their soft skills, he informed. They may be called soft skills, but they are social skills is how Dr. Ravi Kumar described.

How many of present crop of medical practitioners know fully about their practice? Nearly 75% doctors are in private practice and practice on their own. And, only about 25 per cent are employed in big hospitals. How many of them know that an FIR cannot be filecl against a Doctor if the medical advice goes wrong? How many know the nitty-gritties in treating a foreign patient? Some of the doctors are not aware that their practice can be insured with a "Professional Indemnity Insurance"! How many follow the MCI guidelines on Prescription writing and prescribe mostly generic drugs, and write the prescription incapitals?

This workshop, is a unique attempt in the country, as it will address many issues such as: Patient Psychology, Patient Communication, Clinical Etiquette, Prescription Writing, and Avoiding Litigation in Practice, Professional Indemnity Insurance, Handling Foreign Patients, Financial Management & Investments, Taxation Planning, Time and Stress Management etc

The sessions will be handled by relevant experts. For example, Litigation in Medical Practice will be handled by Dr.Srinivas Samavedam, who besides being a doctor, is also a qualified law professional. An insurance expert on Professional Indemnity Insurance will handle a session on the subject. Dr.Ananth M. Pai, who has to his credit a thesis on Medical Tourism, will deal with handling of foreign patients.

Our endeavour is to see that Doctor Patient Relationships should increase and both should benefit from each other and work in very congenial atmosphere.
