Hyderabad Round “Design Yatra”, the longest Design Road Show in India which aims to ‘take designing to masses’ concludes

Design is magical. It is not only meant for elite, but also for the masses, observed experts.

Hyderabad, October 08, 2016….. : Design Yatra’ which aims to ‘take designing to masses’ Hyderabad round councluded. A closing function and a grand gala night held here in city on Friday night. Nearly 300 members of the of IIID—Institute of Indian Interior Designers, Hyderabad Chapter were present.

Jabeen Zacharias, Honorary National Secretary of IIID; Architect Nitin killawala and special guest Architect Habeeb khan graced the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion said, Design Yatra is an initiative of IIID—Institute of Indian Interior Designers, the apex body for the field of Interior Design in India. It is the longest Design Road Show, she said. The objective of the yatra was to create awareness about India among the masses, she said.

What we have achieved through this Design Yatra is we were successful in initiating dialogue with masses and created awareness about the Designing. We created buzz about it. We were successful in telling people that Design is affordable.

Design Yatra is India’s first ‘Design Yatra’, in which designers began their journey of 15,000 km in four Nano cars. It was flagged off by its National President Pratap Jadhav, in Indore in February at concluding function their National Convention. Conceptualised at the national convention of IIID in Indore, the Design yatra which is symbolised by three Tata Nano cars moved through all the cities like Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Jaipur, Sourashtra, Ahmadabad, Baroda, New Delhi, Kolkata, Raipur and Nagpur, Jabeen Zacharias informed

Architect Nitin Killawal delivered a keynote address on “Taking Design for Masses”. Only 5 per cent of population owns cars. But, still there is a road laid for them. Not more than 25 per cent of Corporaters of municipalities are graduates, still they do urban planning. Skywalls are built in urban cities without much planning. So they are becoming bedrooms for homeless, he said.

90 per cent of population doesn’t need Designer and Architects. They need proper housing he said.

Design is not just meant for elite, but is also meant for the common people, he informed.

Giving here welcome address Sona Chatwani, President of Hyderabad Chapter said. This fortnight has been life changing experience she said. TheYatra highghted the need to document some of our heritage sites, design intervention at GHMC. The Yatra also highlighted need to engage students on documenting our history, our art and craft. Today when we finish two weeks of design Yatra in Hyderabad and Vijaywada, what have we achieved? We have achieved dialogues with masses...We have brought the common man the aam aadmi to stand up and notice design professional, she said. We feel we have accomplished the task of taking design to masses!!

She informed that IIID Hyderabad Chapter and Hafele Awards for excellence will be held on 21 st October. Soon we will also launch a Chapter at Amravathi, Sona Chatwani informed.

The Design Yatra reached Hyderabad a fortnight back informed IIID Hyderabad Chapter office bearers: Nanda Kumar. B, Secretary and Aparna Bidarkar, Convenor. The two week journey of this Yatra in both the telugu states concluded on Friday.

Aparna Bidarkar, Convenor in her report of the yatra informed that Part of the Design Yatra, a “Survey on All Ages Friendly Park”was conducted. They plan to create a prototype and submit the GHMC. “Stepwells” in city were documented.

During the brief stint of the convoy in city, the local Chapter of IIID has planned series of activities. Some of these include: “Panel Discussion--Design for Masses” held on 30th September. The impressive list of panelists who included: Mr. Ravi. G. Automotive Designer; Mr. Anish Kuruvilla. Film-maker; Ms. Sathya M. Fashion and Textile Desinger; Mr. Kaushik. R. a renowned Architect and Brig. Ganesham(Retd).

They visited heritage sites and tried to document them. Addressed student community and conducted contests on importance of design etc.

Another program—Re-Visiting the new Vernacular of Temple Design at Mahaboodnagar was held on October 1st. The Yatra visited Sponsor Partner Stores and now travel to Vijayawada and Amaravathi.

They addressed public forum about Parking and Discipline.

A skit was performed at the closing ceremony of the Design Yatra by its members.

IIID is a non-profit, professional body comprises of over 5500 members spread across the country, and has 21 Chapters / Centers. The members include Interior Designers, Architects, Consultants, Engineers, Project Management Consultants (PMC), Design Students, System Integrators, Artists, Painters, Facility Managers, Industry Members, Manufacturers, Suppliers, Vendors, Contractors, Turnkey Solution Providers and so on.
